| <p><b>What do you do?</b><br>These days my time is evenly divided between the Eclipse Platform, where I lead a team of IBM contributors on various components, and the Orion project, where I am the architect and maintainer of the Orion Java server. For the past two years, I have also had the privilege of representing committers on the Eclipse Board of Directors, which gives me a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of the Eclipse Foundation.</p> |
| <p><b>How long have you been using Eclipse?</b><br>Longer than anyone else. In mid 2000, I was on the team implementing the CVS support in Eclipse. We were the very first team to self-host and do all our development of Eclipse within Eclipse itself. CVS support was the last big missing piece needed to self-host so we became the guinea pigs making sure it all worked. I started contributing to Eclipse in 1998, when I ported some the early workspace and Java tooling components from Smalltalk to Java. Of course it wasn't actually called Eclipse until 2001!</p> |
| <p><b>Name five plugins you use and recommend:</b><br>I am not a big plugin user. I like to keep down to the minimal Eclipse Platform, Java tooling, and EGit. I sometimes use <a style="color:#7036be;" href="http://marketplace.eclipse.org/content/eclemma-java-code-coverage">EclEmma</a> for code coverage analysis, which is an excellent tool. In Orion I find the <a style="color:#7036be;" href="https://orion-codemirror.googlecode.com/git/codeMirrorPlugin.html">Code Mirror Modes plugin</a> indispensable to get syntax highlighting for most of the major programming languages.</p> |
| <p><b>What's your favorite thing to do when you're not working?</b><br>My favorite thing outside of work is hanging out with my kids, because they are still young enough that they love spending time with me! I also enjoy playing football (soccer for Americans), and reading fiction.</p> |
