| are Eclipse editors or views. They are part of the 'Memory Analysis' perspective and can be moved or resized |

| <div class="section" id="ref_workbench__heapeditor"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Heap Editor</h2> |
| |
| This is the main window for performing queries on the snapshot. |
| It has separate tabs for each snapshot which is open. |
| See <a class="xref" href="../gettingstarted/basictutorial.html#task_basictutorial__overview">Basic tutorial/overview</a>. |
| Below that is a toolbar which allows different operations and inspections to be performances on the current snapshot. |

| There is then another series of tabbed panes showing the results of various queries and reports on the current snapshot. |

| This has a list of recently used snapshots. |
| The most recently opened snapshots are at the top of the list. |
| A snapshot in italics and with a gray icon does not have the associated index files and will need to be reparsed if opened. |

| <div class="section" id="ref_workbench__heapdumpdetails"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Heap Dump Details</h2> |
| |
| This has a summary of information about a snapshot, incuding the number of objects, the |
| size of the heap, the file name, the date the snapshot was taken and other useful global information. |
| This tracks the last selected snapshot in the main heap editor window, or the last selected |
| snapshot in the Heap Dump History. |

| <div class="section" id="ref_workbench__inspector"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Inspector</h2> |
| |
| This shows details about an individual Java object which has been selected in the main |
| heap editor window. |
| Multiple inspector views can be opened. This is useful if an inspector view is pinned |
| to a particular object in the Heap Editor view. The other inspector view can then be |
| used to inspect a different object. |

| <div class="section" id="ref_workbench__notes"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Notes</h2> |
| |
| This is a space for a user to store notes associated with a snapshot. Text can be typed |
| into this, or can be cut from or pasted into here. |
| It is stored in a file associated with the snapshot, but with the suffix |
| .notes.txt. |
| A object address in the notes view has a hyperlink to the context menu. |

| This view shows the notes for the currently selected snapshot in the heap editor window. |
| The first line of the notes file associated with a snapshot is shown |
| in the Heap Dump Details. This can be useful when going through a |
| long list of recent snapshots in the Heap Dump History to find the |
| desired snapshot without opening each snapshot in turn. |

| This shows the queries which have been recently been performed on the snapshot. |
| When a different snapshot is selected in the main heap editor window, the navigation history |
| for that snapshot is then shown. |

| <div class="section" id="ref_workbench__comparebasket"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Compare Basket</h2> |
| |
| This allows comparisons of trees and tables from one or more snapshots. |
| Trees or tables can be added to this view from the navigator view. |
| The contents of this view is common whichever snapshot is selected in the heap editor window. |

| <div class="section" id="ref_workbench__errorlog"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Error Log</h2> |
| |
| For initial investigation of problems with Eclipse Memory Analyzer, consult the |
| error log using |
| <span class="ph menucascade"><span class="ph uicontrol">Window</span><abbr title="and then"> > </abbr><span class="ph uicontrol">Error Log</span></span>. |
| This shows informational, warning and error messages from parsing a heap dump to show a snapshot. |
| It also shows messages generated from running queries and reports. |
| This is a standard Eclipse IDE view, and various filtering and sorting operations are available. |

| <div class="section" id="ref_workbench__progressmonitor"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Progress Monitor</h2> |
| |
| Progress of long running operations such as parsing a heap dump is normally shown in a separate dialog window. |
| This can be hidden using the 'run in background option'. |
| The run in background option can also be selected by |
| <span class="ph menucascade"><span class="ph uicontrol">Window</span><abbr title="and then"> > </abbr><span class="ph uicontrol">Preferences</span><abbr title="and then"> > </abbr><span class="ph uicontrol">General</span><abbr title="and then"> > </abbr><span class="ph uicontrol">Always run in background</span></span> |
| The Progress Monitor can also be shown as a view using |

| The progress is also shown in the status line at the bottom of the Memory Analyzer window. Clicking on this |
| status line also opens the view. |
